Work is set to begin today on “Piedmont Blues,” the City of Sanford Appearance Commission’s next mural.
The mural will pay tribute to blues legend Floyd Council, who lived and died in Sanford, as the primary focus. Blues musician Pink Anderson will also be featured. Together, these artists inspired the name of the band Pink Floyd. (View the mural RFP here.)
“Piedmont Blues” will be located in the public parking lot at 212 Carthage Street, across from the Temple Theatre. The approved design, submitted by muralist Britt Flood of Pittsboro, will replace the “Wild Bill’s Auction Company” sign. When finished, the mural will span 81 feet wide and 48 feet tall.
The mural was funded by private donations made to Friends of Sanford, the City of Sanford’s 501(c)3. The project is managed by the City of Sanford.
During the mural work, two parking spaces in the public lot will be blocked off by cones. There will also be a lift truck parked in the upper portion of the lot intermittently over the next month. This will require public parking lot users to back out of the lot if it is full.
The anticipated completion date for the Piedmont Blues mural is late fall. A dedication is being planned for May 13, 2023.
