A former nurse manager at Central Carolina Hospital, Phyllis Poe, has established a scholarship to benefit nursing students through the Central Carolina Community College Foundation. This scholarship, named the Phyllis Poe Scholarship, aims to support future nurses at the community college.
Phyllis Poe spent over 34 years managing the Intensive Care Unit at Central Carolina Hospital. Her own educational journey was supported by a full merit scholarship from the Sanford Women of the Moose, which covered the costs of her nursing education. She expressed that her decision to create a scholarship is a personal one, influenced by her life experiences and values. "Over the years, my family and I have been the recipients of many good deeds," Poe stated. "Now, I wanted to be a giver in a tangible way, creating opportunities for others to succeed just as we did. Scholarships change lives, and I know that firsthand."
Phyllis's understanding of scholarships' transformational impact extends beyond her own experience, as her daughter, Kim, also benefited from full merit scholarships for her undergraduate and graduate studies. Her late husband, Wayne Poe, further enriched their educational legacy by earning an associate degree and completing continuing education courses at Central Carolina Community College.
Wayne Poe's education at CCCC supported his career growth in the Sanford Police Department, where he advanced from patrolman to assistant chief during his more than 50-year tenure. In his memory, the Poe family established the Wayne Poe Scholarship, aimed at supporting aspiring law enforcement officers at the same college.
Dr. Emily C. Hare, CCCC Foundation Executive Director, commended the Poes for their contributions, stating, "Their support not only eases the financial burden for aspiring nurses and law enforcement professionals but also reinforces the importance of these vital careers. We are deeply grateful for their commitment to education and their belief in the future of our students."
The establishment of these scholarships for nursing and law enforcement ensures that Wayne and Phyllis Poe's legacy of community service and dedication endures. "It’s about helping others get the chance to fulfill their potential," Phyllis said. "And I hope this scholarship will inspire others to do the same."
