Savannah-Chatham County had almost 190 students from fourteen Elementary School teams and five Middle School teams participate in Georgia's Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl this month.  In order to participate, each of the students read the same books as other students across the state and participated in the Reading Bowl at Godley Station.  The Reading Bowl is a competitive game format where students are questioned about the content of the 20 Georgia Book Award Nominees each year.

J.G. Smith won first in the elementary division and May Howard finished second, with Godley Station in third.  In the middle school division, Godley Station placed first with New Hampstead coming in second and Hesse K8 was third.

The first and second place teams will compete in Valdosta on February 25 against other teams in the South Region. If they win, they will move on to Divisional competition. The Georgia HRRB includes six geographic competition regions: North, East, West, Metro, Middle and South. All school districts in Georgia are divided into one of these regions.

Teams participating in the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl read and study Georgia Peach Award and Georgia Book Award books and compete in a quiz bowl event. Elementary and middle school students read and are quizzed on the 20 Georgia Book Award Nominees, while high school students read and are quizzed on the 20 Georgia Peach Teen Book Award Nominees. The books change yearly.

Helen Ruffin, a Library Media Specialist at Sky Haven Elementary School in DeKalb County founded the unique competition in 1986.  It is open to students in grades 4-12 across the state. Six geographic regions hold competitions. From these six regions, two competition divisions have been formed: Division 1, which consists of the North, West and Metro HRRB Regions, and Division 2, which consists of the East, Middle and South HRRB Regions.
