Chatham Community Library Presents Virtual Film Screening: Daring to Resist: Three Women Who Faced the Holocaust

Chatham County recently issued the following announcement.

In recognition of Universal Human Rights Month, Chatham Community Library will host a virtual film screening of Daring to Resist: Three Women Who Faced the Holocaust (1999), beginning Thursday, December 9, 2021, and continuing through Thursday, December 16. This program is free and open to the public.

In this gripping documentary, three Jewish women recall their lives as teenagers in occupied Holland, Hungary, and Poland, when they refused to remain passive as the Nazis rounded up local Jewish populations. Defying her family's wishes, each girl found an unexpected way of fighting back. Barbara Rodbell, as a ballet dancer shuttling Jews to safe houses and distributing resistance newspapers; Faye Schulman, as a photographer and partisan waging guerrilla war against the Germans; and Shulamit Lack, as a leader in an underground Zionist group smuggling Jews across the border. The film is enriched by home movies, archival footage, and previously unpublished photographs.

Access to the virtual screening will be available beginning December 9, by visiting: https://www.wmm.com/virtual-screening-room/daring-to-resist-watch-page-chatham-community-library. A password is required at the time of viewing. Those who are interested may contact social.library@chathamlibraries.org to request the password or for additional information. The library has purchased a hard copy of the film if residents who wish to see the film miss the virtual screening window.
