Campbell University recently issued the following announcement.
A musician the New York Times hailed as “The International First Lady of the Piano” will perform in Campbell’s Hobson Performance Center Tuesday night for a concert dedicating the University’s new Steinway Concert Grand Piano.
Teresa Walters — who has performed on six continents and all over the U.S. in venues including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, Wigmore Hall in London, Moscow’s Great Hall and the Salle Cortot in Paris — will perform selections from 19th Century Hungarian composer Franz Liszt on the nine-foot concert grand piano gifted to Campbell University in 2020 by the Donnie M. Royal Foundation in memory of Dr. Donnie Royal and his wife Dorothy Royal.
Walters’ performance is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday following a welcome by Campbell President Dr. J. Bradley Creed and Board of Trustees Chairman Ben Thompson and an introduction from Executive Vice President Dr. John Roberson. Admission is free and open to all Campbell students and faculty and the general public.
The concert will highlight the Hobson Performance Center in the D. Rich Building. The 1,000-seat auditorium was completed in 2019 and is now Campbell’s premier space for performing arts. It’s also quickly earning a reputation as one of the area’s top performance venues. It also serves as a learning studio for students studying piano and organ.
The concert will also be a unique opportunity to watch and hear one of the world’s premiere pianists. Australian National Television called Teresa Walters “one of the world’s most significant pianists,” and the American Record Guide once wrote of her, “[Walter’s] competition is virtually nil.” She is the also first American pianist invited to present three anniversary concerts in honor of Liszt’s birthday with performances at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music and the Liszt Museum in Budapest, Liszt’s Birthplace in Raiding, and at Esterhazy Palace under the patronage of Prince Anton Esterhazy.
