Campbell University recently issued the following announcement.
The head of a Nobel Peace Prize-winning organization battling global hunger and former governor of South Carolina will serve as the keynote speaker at this week’s Consortium for Global Education’s annual meeting, hosted this year by Campbell University and President J. Bradley Creed.
David Beasley, executive director of the United Nations World Food Programme, will speak on “A World Without Hunger: From Famine to Food Security For All” on Thursday in the banquet room of the Oscar N. Harris Student Union.
The World Food Programme is the world’s largest humanitarian organization and the world’s largest provider of school meals. As of 2019, the organization had served 97 million people in 88 countries, with two-thirds of its work done in areas besieged by war and conflict.
Beasley’s speech will wrap up the first full day of the Consortium for Global Education’s annual meeting, which invites faculty, higher ed leadership, speakers and experts from all over the world to discuss and explore ideas and creative actions “that can provide value to campuses and partnerships around the globe.” The CGE’s mission is to be a “catalyst for peace through building educational networks, prosperity with members and international colleagues and partnerships that are sustaining and creative toward success for all.”
This will mark Campbell University’s first time hosting the annual meeting, which was made a virtual event in 2020 due to the pandemic. The event was held at Dallas Baptist University in 2019, Samford University in Alabama in 2018 and Anderson University in South Carolina in 2017.
The meeting will also mark the first large-scale event held at Campbell’s new Oscar N. Harris Student Union, which opened in 2020. Butler Chapel and the McLeod Admissions Building will also house sessions and meetings during the three-day event, which begins Wednesday and ends Friday.
