Campbell University Athletics issued the following announcement on Sept. 18.
Camels unbeaten in last three outings
In a rematch of last season's Big South Conference final, Campbell defeated High Point 2-1 Saturday night at Vert Stadium in the league opener for both sides.
Jackie Richards and Reagan Baiotto scored first half goals and Campbell (3-2-2, 1-0-0) once again made a half-time lead stand on the road against its closest league rival.
Last April, CU earned a 4-3 victory in the Big South title game on the same Vert Stadium surface. Saturday, the Camels scored twice in the opening 20 minutes and kept the Panthers (0-6-2, 0-1-0) winless though eight games this season.
"I am really proud of the players for coming out and working extremely hard for a very important three points on the road," said Campbell head coach Samar Azem. "We're riddled with some injuries right now and as we work players back in, it's been exceptionally exciting to see a lot of players step into new roles and positions."
Richards opened up the scoring after 13 minutes with her second strike this year – a left-footed shot from the top of the box that curled into the right side netting of Morgan Hairston's goal.
Less than six minutes later, Baiotto took a pass from Emma Bushee and drilled a low right-footed shot from close range for her second goal of the season.
Campbell, which had not allowed a goal since the second half at East Carolina on Sept. 2, finally conceded after a shutout string of 286 minutes.
Lily Neubauer sent a cross in from the left side the Magdalena Schwarz tapped in at the back post to bring High Point within one in the 75th minute.
However, the Panthers were able to muster only two more shots – and none on target over the final 15 minutes.
Reaghan Duval finished with five saves in the Camel nets, while Hairston made four stops for High Point. The Panthers finished with a 15-8 edge in shots, while each team had six on target.
"High Point is a really good team and we let them back into the game," said Azem. "We lost our composure, we lost the transitional game, so we want to clean that up and we definitely will. These players are hungry to get better and this is the start of our journey. A lot of work is left to do, and we are excited about getting after it."
Campbell will carry a three-match unbeaten stretch (2-0-1) into Wednesday's 7:00 p.m. start at Presbyterian before returning home next Saturday (Sept. 25) vs. Radford.
