Campbell set for final non-conference weekend

Campbell University Athletics issued the following announcement on Sept. 16.

Campbell (2-7) will look for a bounce-back weekend at the Hampton Inn & Suites UNCW Landfall Classic in Wilmington, N.C. The Camels are set to face UNCG, UNCW and Jacksonville during the final weekend of non-conference play.

Campbell opens up play at the Landfall Classic on Friday with a 3 o'clock tilt with UNCG. The Camels return to the court for two matches on Saturday against UNCW at 12:30 p.m. and Jacksonville at 3:00 p.m.

Series Histories

The Camels are 8-20 all-time against UNCG, but have not faced the Spartans since 2006. The teams first met on Sept. 8, 1989 and played three times that season with UNCG winning all three. The Spartans won the first 12 meetings of the series before Campbell's first win in 1994. UNCG won the last meeting in straight sets on Aug. 29, 2006.

The Camels are 16-34 all-time against UNCW/ The teams first met in 1986, in a Seahawk win. The Seahawks would go on to win the first 17 meetings before Campbell's first win in 1994. The teams have now met every year with a full season since 2010. UNCW won the most recent match in five sets on Sept. 3, 2019 in Buies Creek. The last meeting in Wilmington (2018) was a Seahawk victory in straight sets.

Campbell is 4-17 all-time against the Dolphins in a series largely centered around Campbell's time in the Atlantic Sun Conference. They first met in 1986, a 2-0 win for Jacksonville. They became regular foes in 1998 when Jacksonville first joined the A-SUN. The teams last met on Nov. 5, 2010 during the last season Campbell was a member of the A-SUN before returning to the Big South.

About the Field

UNCG carries a tournament-best 9-1 record into the match against Campbell. The Spartans went 3-0 last weekend with wins over Coppin State, Marist and George Mason, dropping only one set in the process. They opened the year with a 3-1 win over Big South opponent Radford. The lone blemish on the Spartan resume is a five-set loss to Eastern Kentucky on Aug. 28. They have now won five in a row.

The Spartans have posted some big numbers this season, as they are seventh in the nation in total digs and have four players with 100+ digs on the year. The offense is guided by setter Gabriela McHugh, sitting fourth in the nation with 399 assists. 

UNCW is hosting their second home tournament of the season. The Seahawks sit at 1-7 this year with their only win coming at home over North Alabama on Aug. 28. UNCW is on a six-match losing streak and went 0-3 at the Chanticleer Classic, including falling in four sets to Radford. 

The Seahawk offense is paced by Katie Lanz and Brianna Haggerty with 78 and 76 kills, respectively. Haggerty also leads the team with 66 digs. 

Jacksonville enters at 2-7 with both wins coming at home over UNCW. The teams will meet for the third time this season on Friday. JU is coming off being swept during their home Dolphin Classic by Furman, LIU and USF. The Dolphins dropped the season-opener to Charleston Southern in five sets.

Jacksonville's offense is led by Cami Kelsay with 111 kills on the year, good for 3.58 kills/set. Kariana Ayala anchors the defense with 3.33 digs/set on the season.

Last Time Out

Campbell is coming off an 0-3 weekend at the C of C Classic. The Camels fell in four sets to Florida A&M to open the tournament on Friday night. The following day included a five-set loss to Davidson and a four-set loss to Charleston. Of the nine sets lost, eight were decided by four points or fewer. Three sets were decided by the minimum two points.  

Melody Paige was named to the all-tournament team after notching 35 kills on .475 hitting on the week. Paige has now been named all-tournament all three weekends this season.

Despite the losses, a handful of Camels notched statistical career highs:

Claranne Fechter: 31 digs vs Davidson

Emily Mitter: 28 assists vs Davidson

Chloe Cook: 18 kills vs Davidson

6 service aces vs Davidson

Melody Paige: 17 kills vs Davidson

Lailah Green: 3 assists vs Davidson
