Campbell University issued the following announcement on Sept. 16.
Campbell (3-2-1) returns to the familiar confines of the Eakes Athletic Complex Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff vs. Georgia Southern (3-3-0). Ranked No. 7 in this week's South Region poll, the Fighting Camels are 2-1-1 at home this year, while the Eagles are 1-3-0 away from Statesboro.
LAST TIME OUT: Campbell - Campbell limited No. 4 North Carolina to only 9 shots all evening, but the Tar Heels broke through with an 82nd minute goal by Cameron Fisher to earn a 1-0 victory Tuesday at Chapel Hill... Georgia Southern - The Eagles dropped a 5-0 decision Tuesday at No. 2 Clemson.
SERIES HISTORY: Campbell stands 8-2 all-time vs. the Eagles. In the last meeting between the teams, Campbell started a 15-match unbeaten stretch with a 1-0 victory over Georgia Southern Sept. 21, 2019 at Statesboro. Thibaut Jacquel scored the game's only goal in the 63rd minute.
POTENT OFFENSE: Campbell ranks 11th in the country in goals (14), 8th in assists (15) and 9th in points (43)... CU has scored multiple goals in four of its six outings, including a season-high 4 twice... Through six matches, six different Camels have scored, while eight more have provided assists... Tyler Young leads the Big South and ranks 9th nationally with 11 points (4G, 3A), Daniel Hernandez (3G, 0A), and Diego Konincks (3G, 0A) are tied for 2nd in the league scoring charts.
HOME, SWEET HOME: The Camels stand 19-2-4 in their last 25 matches at the Eakes Complex, including a 2-1-1 mark in the 2021 season. CU finished 2019 with a 10-0-1 ledger at home, including two wins in the Big South Championship, outscored its opponents 34-3 in Buies Creek and did not trail in 11 matches. Under 7th-year Coach Dustin Fonder, Campbell is 34-17-5 in Buies Creek.
GEORGIA SOUTHERN GLANCE: Two current Eagles are familiar to Campbell soccer followers... Sophomore Manuel Prieto spent last season with Campbell and scored the game's only goal in a 1-0 win at Gardner-Webb... Grad transfer Luca Ziegler was a 3-time all-conference defender at Presbyterian and member of the Blue Hose' 2017 squad that advanced to the NCAA tournament... Georgia Southern has dealt Big South member Presbyterian its only loss, a 1-0 decision in the season opener ... The Eagles and Camels have faced one common opponent in North Carolina. UNC defeated GSU 3-0 and Campbell 1-0... In GSU's 3 wins, the Eagles have outscored their foes 5-1 with two shutouts... In Georgia Southern's 3 losses, it has surrendered at least 3 goals... HEAD COACH DUSTIN FONDER (Roanoke, '94) is in his seventh season at Campbell (61-43-11 overall, 30-16-3 Big South). His overall head coaching record stands at 139-106-29, including a 79-63-18 mark in eight seasons at High Point. Fonder guided the 2018 Camels to their first conference tournament title and NCAA College Cup berth since 2007. He was named 2019 Big South Coach of the Year after leading the Camels to the program's first league regular season title since 2009... Also named Big South Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2010 while at High Point.
CAMELS VS. NATIONALLY RANKED TEAMS: Campbell stands 2-8-3 against nationally-ranked teams in 7 seasons under Dustin Fonder following a 1-0 loss Sept. 14 at No. 4 North Carolina. CU opened the season with a 3-1 victory Aug. 26 at #30 UNCG. Since the start of the 2019 season, the Camels are 2-4-1 vs. ranked sides.
