Campbell University Athletics issued the following announcement on Aug. 4.
Campbell will face the five-time national champion Blue Devils as well as 2021 NCAA tournament participant Hartford in the Duke Veterans Day Weekend Showcase, Nov. 12-13 at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The Fighting Camels, who finished 17-10 overall and reached the Big South title game last March, will meet Hartford on Friday, Nov. 12 after Duke hosts Army West Point. Hartford (15-9) won the America East Conference tournament before falling to eventual national champion Baylor in the NCAA first round.
Campbell will face Duke (13-11) on Saturday, Nov. 13 before Hartford squares off against Army West Point. Duke defeated Campbell 82-56 in the 1992 NCAA tournament first round at the Greensboro Coliseum before winning a second-straight national crown. The Camels' only previous appearance at Cameron Indoor Stadium was an 84-59 loss on Jan. 13, 1997 against a Blue Devil squad that included Jeff Capel, Nate James, Steve Wojciechowski, Trajan Langdon and current Duke associate head coach Chris Carrawell.
"We are thrilled to be able to play in Cameron vs. Duke in Coach K's last season on the bench," said Campbell head coach Kevin McGeehan. "What an amazing experience for this veteran team! What's even more special about the opportunity to play Duke is that it this season marks the 30 year anniversary of Campbell's NCAA tournament game vs Duke."
The Fighting Camels will also travel Dec. 4 to VCU, which posted a 19-7 record last season and was runner-up in the Atlantic 10 before earning an at-large berth to the NCAA tourney. The date will mark the first men's basketball meeting between the programs since the 1978-79 campaign.
"We are excited to be able to go to Richmond and the Seigel Center," said McGeehan. "Coach (Mike) Rhoades and I have been friends for many years and I respect the job he has done in his career. Both Duke and VCU will be great opportunities for our guys to play against the best."
Campbell returns 98.9 percent of its scoring and minutes from last season's squad that fashioned a school Division I era (since '77-78) record nine-game win streak to reach the Big South title game. Second-team all-conference performers Cedric Henderson, Jr. (15.0 ppg) and Jordan Whitfield (14.6) lead a unit that ranked 10th in the country in field goal percentage (.496) and 25th in 3-point accuracy (.380) in 2020-21.
Under the direction of ninth-year head coach Kevin McGeehan, the Camels have won 89 games and made three postseason appearances over the last five years, both tops in the program's Division I history.
The 2021-22 Duke men's basketball season marks the final campaign for Hall of Fame head coach Mike Krzyzewski. Set to retire following this season, Coach K has won an NCAA record 1,170 games in his 46-year career, including 1,097 wins and five national titles in his 41 seasons at Duke.
