A Northeast-based A Neuroscience research company with a strong presence in North Carolina is planning by 2040 to stop using fossil fuels at its operations and improve public health.
Neuroscience pioneer Biogen said in a Sept. 14 release that it launched a $250-million plan to eliminate fossil fuel emissions.
As part of the 20-year initiative, the company — with operations in the Research Triangle Park — will pursue global analysis collaborations focused on the effects of fossil fuel-driven air pollution on public health.
"'Our Healthy Climate, Healthy Lives' initiative builds on Biogen's long-standing strategy to deal with climate change by addressing the interrelated challenges of climate and health, including the realm of brain health," Biogen CEO Michael Vounatsos said in the statement.
The initiative includes using renewable energy to power all operations, encouraging suppliers to become fossil fuel-free, and eliminating or recycling all plastics used in packaging, the company said in the release.
"While others are taking significant steps to get to net-zero carbon emissions, Biogen is taking the next step by eliminating fossil fuel use in all aspects of its business," Bill Sisson, executive director, World Business Council for Sustainable Development North America, said in the release. I applaud their ambition."
