Chatham County is making an effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19 amid its preparation for the hurricane season, officials said.
Chatham County residents should plan in advance by making an emergency plan, officials said in a Sept. 1 release.
"This hurricane season brings us additional challenges that are quite unprecedented," Emergency Management Director Steve Newton said in the release. "Not only is an above-normal to extremely active season predicted, but we continue to respond to the coronavirus and must take necessary precautions in our emergency planning."
Chatham leaders added that residents should build a quick escape kit, also known as a "go ba," as part of their plan.
Residents should also prepare for power outages that could "last for several days," officials said in the release.
However, county officials noted that shelters may not be the best place to head in the event of a hurricane.
"Due to COVID-19 still being present in our community, residents are advised to utilize an emergency shelter as a last resort and should make plans in advance to stay with a family member, friend or other safe place," Newton said in the release.
