Central Carolina Hospital (CCH) has gained national recognition for achieving one of the lowest breast cancer screening recall rates in the United States. According to the April 9 edition of Becker’s Hospital Review, CCH was listed as tenth in the nation, with a recall rate of only 1.5 percent, significantly lower than the national average of 9 percent. It is the only hospital in North Carolina to make it into the Top 10 rankings.

The Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) assesses hospital claims data to determine how often imaging tests are conducted when they may not be medically necessary. One specific measure is the frequency of “additional breast cancer screening within 45 days of an initial mammogram.”

Dave Santoemma, Chief Executive Officer of Central Carolina Hospital, commented on the hospital’s achievement: “This rating reflects our hospital’s continuous commitment to delivering high-quality care while also being good stewards of healthcare resources.”

Travis Henderson, MD, Vice Chief of Staff and radiologist at CCH, highlighted the hospital’s approach: “Starting from the person scheduling these appointments, to the team registering patients for their exam, the skilled mammographers acquiring high-quality images, and the patients who return year after year, entrusting us to provide these important exams, this number reflects our dedication to quality, consistency, and the strong relationships we have with each patient we care for.”

Dr. Henderson also emphasized the implications for patients, adding, “The direct benefit to the patient is the elimination of time and dollars spent on unnecessary follow-up imaging, by staying focused on the best course of care for each individual.”

Montie Scott, Director of Imaging, acknowledged the team behind the success: “Congratulations to the Imaging Center staff for achieving these outstanding national results. We are proud of our team’s dedication to quality care and look forward to continuing to serve our community.”
